I know exactly where I stand on the issue of life reflecting art or art reflecting life. I learned an interesting lesson back in the Eighties when my department decided that the fourth year English groups would spend half a term on 'Media Studies', including a study of soap opera. When we finalised the scheme of work, I said loftily, 'I'm going to have some difficulty with one topic. I never watch soap operas.' My colleagues tried hard not to exchange glances. Before the course I dutifully and disdainfully watched the allotted episodes of Grange Hill, Coronation Street, etc. Our last lesson on the topic was a debate about the impact of soap operas on real life. At the end of the lesson two girls bustled up to me, looking self-righteous and self-important. 'Miss, do you watch 'Grange Hill'?' one of them asked.
